Rev. Trey Hegar, Pastor

Marvin Walter Hegar III (Trey) felt the call to ministry early in his life in Texas. His father suggested that if he was going to preach about life, he should gain some life experience. In order to gain experience, Trey decided to join the Marines after high school. In the Marines, he served as an air control electronics operator. After four years in the Marine Corps, he attended Texas State University, earning a BA in English Literature with a minor in Psychology. He received the Master of Divinity degree at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 2007. Before and after seminary, Trey, worked in youth and campus ministry. After receiving his Master of Divinity degree Trey completed a year long residency in Clinical Pastoral Education. Following his work as a chaplain Trey served two years as Director of Family Ministries at Brenham Presbyterian Church, Five years at Purity Presbyterian Church in Chester, South Carolina, and has been at First Presbyterian Church in Mount Pleasant since January 1 of 2015.
Trey writes that he thinks a call is “not just to a church but a whole community.” He has demonstrated this in his actions, where he has worked with his congregation to get “outside the walls of the church.” Trey enjoys engaging others wherever they are, whether it is at the soccer field, band competition, or community events. He describes this as a “bleacher ministry.” He enjoys participating in family life as a pastor and friend. He acknowledges that “God has worked wonders in my life far beyond my expectations” and says he thinks he is “seasoned, but not well done.”
Trey is married to Sarah, who is an Iowa native and who is also an ordained Presbyterian minister. They have a son named Hudson. We find Trey to be an energetic, passionate, faithful leader who loves all people. He aims to share the love of Christ with all people. Trey believes following the message and teachings of Jesus is life changing. There is no better role model to follow than the Spirit of God we find when we seek to find God in Christ.

Rev. Sarah Hegar, Director of Congregational Ministries
Sarah grew up in Fort Dodge, Iowa and is a lifelong Presbyterian. She majored in Physical Education at Iowa State University and upon graduation completely shifted gears to attend seminary at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, Texas. It was there that she met Trey, a handsome senior who was a constant distraction to her studies. They married in 2007. Amidst the distractions she was a Jean Brown Scholar, served on Student Senate, and graduated seminary with a Master of Divinity degree. In 2010, Sarah and Trey moved to South Carolina. She was ordained and served a small country church on Sundays and worked on staff for Providence Presbytery during the week. After their move to Iowa Sarah joined the staff of the Presbytery of East Iowa as Networking Associate.
Sarah has been the keynote speaker at multiple women retreats. She has served as chairperson for Bethelwoods Camp & Conference Center in South Carolina and is currently serving on the board for Camp Wyoming.
In her spare time you can find Sarah playing golf, walking at East Lake Park, cheering on her beloved Cyclones, traveling, and enjoying time with her son Hudson and yellow lab Maggie.
